8-12 years old 8-Week Scratch Game Design & Coding Does your child love video games? What if they could build their own? In this exciting 8-week Scratch Game Design & Coding class, elementary students will learn the basics of computer programming while designing and creating their very own interactive games! Using Scratch, a kid-friendly visual programming platform developed by MIT, students will learn coding by connecting colorful programming blocks instead of typing complicated lines of code. This makes it a great introduction to programming for young students with no previous coding experience required. Each week, students will explore new game-development skills while creating fun, playable projects. They'll learn how to create characters, design game levels, control movement, keep score, add sound effects, build challenges, and make their games respond to the player. Along the way, students will be introduced to important programming concepts such as sequences, loops, conditions, variables, coordinates, events, and problem-solving. They'll also learn one of the most important skills every programmer needs: how to find a problem, test a solution, and improve their code! Students will have plenty of opportunities to customize their games with their own characters, artwork, sounds, stories, and ideas. As their skills grow, their games will become more challenging and interactive. Over 8 Weeks, Students Will Learn: How to navigate and create projects in Scratch Basic computer programming and coding concepts Character and sprite design Movement and player controls Animation and sound effects Scoring systems and variables Game rules, challenges, and obstacles Level and background design Debugging and problem-solving How to design and build their own playable game By the end of the program, students will have created their own games that they can play, share, and proudly show off to family and friends! No coding experience necessary — just bring your imagination! From playing games to creating them, this 8-week adventure is a fun first step into the worlds of coding, technology, and game design!
